Many years ago, when I was in my fortys, I was in a wheelchair, barely able to feed myself or brush my own teeth, with almost no hope of ever improving. I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life in a convalescent home, because my care was too much for my family.
Today, I live a normal, healthy life, working full-time, exercising 45 minutes daily, enjoying endless possibilities.
Most of us encounter times in our lives where we feel there is no hope for change…times of great discouragement, even despair. We can’t imagine how things will ever improve.
For some, it might be a health issue. For others, it might be a difficult marriage, child, or other relationship. For others, it might be a personal issue: an addiction, disordered eating, anxiety, or depression. These things take a tremendous toll on us, robbing us of huge amounts of energy and life.
But I want to encourage you with my own vast improvement, and to tell you that I’ve seen so many others experience tremendous improvement, whatever their issue. As the Bible puts it, “Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5)
So the question for you is “What?” What is the next step you need to take to see improvement in your situation? Ask God this question, then listen for His still small voice in the coming days, putting a thought in your mind, or maybe a guiding word spoken by someone. And then take that step, for goodness sake! Don’t wait!
This will lead to a next step, then the next step, and the next step, until you might be like me: starting in total brokenness with no hope and ending beyond what you could have imagined!
To quote Dr. Marvin from What About Bob?, “Baby step it all the way!”
And to quote God, “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
